Review: I used the Big Berkey water filter every day for the last year and now I can’t go back
One of the top goals for any prepper is to find supplies that fit naturally into everyday life. It’s one thing to buy a product, store it on a shelf, and wait for an emergency—but the real value comes when you get benefits both in daily use *and* during a crisis. You’re spending money on something you’d want anyway, and you're getting free preparedness coverage in the process.
A countertop water filter is one of the best examples of this dual-purpose approach, and the **$280 Big Berkey** is the reigning champion of this category. The bottom line from this review is simple: if you're looking for a countertop filter, the Berkey is an excellent choice.
**Review**: Best Water Filters for Your Home
Many experienced preppers already know about this, but it's worth reiterating for newcomers. Countertop filters are a graceful and impactful way to build resilience without sacrificing convenience or style.
**Value in Daily Life**:
- You get clean, great-tasting water on demand
- It looks sleek and doesn’t scream "prepper"
- Lasts much longer than pitcher filters
- No installation required—just place it on your counter
- No slow dripping; water sits ready for you
- Helps reduce plastic waste and supports ethical water practices
**Value in an Emergency**:
Imagine being stuck at home with no working water supply or contaminated water due to a boil notice. You'd need to collect and treat wild water. Plumbed-in systems like reverse osmosis aren't designed for this, and pitcher filters are too small for family use. That's where the Berkey shines.
**Testing Notes**:
Thanks to the team at **BigBerkeyWaterFilters.com**, we received a sample last year when the supply chain was chaotic. One issue in this market is that all Berkeys are sold through third-party resellers, not directly by New Millennium Concepts. While there are some shady sellers out there, BBWF.com is a trusted source.
We planned to do a head-to-head test between the Berkey and other top gravity filters, but due to inventory issues during the pandemic, we couldn’t get all the competitors. Instead, we’ve used the Big Berkey as our main water source for a full year to understand its real-world performance.
This is more of a lifestyle review than a technical one. Once we have more competitors, we’ll update the comparison with detailed testing, including durability tests.
**Berkey Basics**:
The design is simple: two stainless steel containers stack together. The top holds dirty water, which flows down through the filters into the bottom container. Gravity does the work.
You can even create a similar system using 5-gallon buckets.
The **Black filters** ($120 per pair) are reusable and replaceable. They clearly list what they remove on the packaging. They protect against a wide range of contaminants, including bacteria, heavy metals, and more.
We’ve been running with two Black filters, and after a year of heavy use, they’ve only needed cleaning once. With a few extra filters in our emergency stash, we can treat enough water to last for years.
Cleaning is straightforward. The stainless steel body isn’t too bad to wipe down, and the filters just need a quick scrub.
Flow rate is decent, though the first time it took three hours to filter a full tank. After priming, it usually takes around two hours.
Note: Berkey filters don’t work well with softened water.
**Aftermarket Stands Are a Must-Have**:
While you can place the Berkey on a counter, it's easier with a stand. We bought a $35 Amazon stand, which made a huge difference. It gives more flexibility and improves the look of your kitchen.
**Price Point**:
The Berkey is slightly overpriced compared to alternatives. For the base model plus two filters, you're paying $50–75 more than ideal. However, it’s still a solid investment.
**Plastic Components**:
Some parts are made of cheap plastic, like the spigot. A $25 stainless steel version is available, but it should be included by default.
**Sight Glass Spigot**:
It helps monitor water levels, but we don’t think it's worth the extra cost for most people. It has limitations and could break easily. Unless you have mobility issues, it's not essential.
Overall, the Berkey is a reliable, long-lasting solution that fits seamlessly into daily life and offers strong emergency protection. If you're looking for a countertop water filter, the Big Berkey is hard to beat.
