Foxconn invests heavily to promote the development of the flexible packaging industry

Foxconn is currently in the process of establishing a science and technology industrial park in Changchun City, Jilin Province. This initiative aims to develop an environmentally-friendly degradable plastics business, with the goal of completing and putting it into use by the end of 2015. The new facility is expected to be fully operational by December 2016. While the company faces challenges, it also sees promising opportunities within the industry. One of the key reasons for Foxconn's decision to set up in Changchun is the region's strong corn resource advantage. Corn-based environmental protection materials are seen as a crucial step in promoting the development of biodegradable plastics, aligning with global environmental trends. According to Jiang Chunruo, project manager at Foxconn Technology Group’s Environmental Protection Plastic Products Co., Ltd., this move will help accelerate the adoption of eco-friendly packaging solutions. Changchun Leiguan Environmental Protection Plastic Products Co., Ltd., established in 2013, is the first investment made by Foxconn in Jilin Province. It is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Xiancheng Co., Ltd., with a registered capital of $7 million. The company is designed to produce 7,000 tons of degradable plastic products annually, including shopping bags and tableware. It has already developed the capability to produce various types of plastic packaging and food service items. In addition to its efforts in Changchun, Foxconn has also announced plans to build a new factory in Zhengzhou, Henan Province. Earlier reports indicated that the company intends to invest over 3 billion yuan in the project. Recently, it was revealed that the total investment and completion timeline have been officially disclosed. The project is scheduled to be completed by December 2016. This marks the second LTPS LCD panel project in China after Shenzhen, and it represents the highest generation and most advanced technology available in domestic LTPS production. This project comes after Foxconn's smartphone terminal project was successfully settled in Zhengzhou in 2010. With the completion of the second phase of the Zhengzhou Foxconn Airport Port Project, it is expected to become a flagship in the smart terminal industry chain. As a major user of packaging materials, Foxconn's expansion will significantly increase the demand for flexible plastic packaging. This development is likely to benefit local packaging companies, especially those involved in flexible packaging solutions. However, some industry experts note that while the opportunity exists, it may not be easy for all packaging firms to become suppliers. Foxconn's products often require specialized flexible packaging with features like anti-static, moisture-proof, and shock-absorbing properties. Only companies with expertise in functional composite packaging may have a better chance of securing long-term partnerships with Foxconn.
