The term "a hundred days of injury and bones" refers to the long recovery period often required after a fracture. Traditionally, patients have had to wear a rigid plaster cast wrapped in thick bandages, which can be uncomfortable and inconvenient. However, thanks to advancements in 3D printing technology, this outdated method is now being reimagined. Plaster casts come with two major issues: they are difficult to clean and do not allow the skin to breathe. This makes daily life challenging, especially during seasonal changes—uncomfortable in winter and unbearable in summer. Scott Summit, who suffered an arm injury, spent six months recovering. As the design director at Bespoke, a 3D printing company specializing in custom stents and prosthetics, he saw an opportunity to create something better. Inspired by his own experience, Summit designed a 3D-printed brace that offers a more comfortable and practical alternative. The process began with a 3D scan of his arm, followed by the creation of a lightweight, customized support structure. This brace uses three key points to stabilize the arm, allowing the ligaments to heal gradually. Unlike traditional casts, it doesn't fully encase the arm, ensuring breathability and ease of movement. At just 5 mm thick, the brace is almost unnoticeable and even resembles a piece of art. "The beauty of 3D printing lies in its endless possibilities," Summit explained. "From space exploration to fashion and dentistry, the applications are limitless. We realized early on that healthcare is a huge market, and because every person is unique, there's no one-size-fits-all solution." Doctors have also praised the innovation. With this brace, patients can shower normally, and the device can even be used on wounds—something that wasn’t possible with traditional casts. Summit noted, "This product not only simplifies the process for doctors but also provides a more comfortable experience for patients. While I can’t say it’s the best solution, it’s definitely a significant improvement over traditional methods." Although the cost of the brace hasn’t been disclosed, Summit reflected on how far 3D printing has come. "Seven years ago, imagining a solution like this would have seemed impossible. Now, we’ve proven it works better than conventional treatments."
