Recently, IRPI, a spacecraft fluid system company in Oregon, has developed a 3D printed coffee cup specifically designed for use in a zero-gravity environment. Currently, the company has released a 3D printed space cup to the public through a project called Spaceware.

It is understood that the shape of the cup is similar to a mixed shape of a combination of a boat and a nose. By carefully designing it, astronauts can sip coffee or other liquids in a zero-gravity environment without having to squeeze them out of the sachet. The project was initiated eight years ago, when NASA astronaut Don Pettit contacted IRPI and asked if there were any bags and straws used in the space. Of course, IRPI has completed the task.

With the help of its senior scientist and vice president Mark Weislogel, the company prototyped the cup, taking into account geometry, wetting and surface tension, making drinking in space possible. According to IRPI, the lip of the cup is ideal for sucking liquid up the wall of the container up to the drinker's mouth, which is different from how the fuel tank performs at zero gravity. Using the basic structure, Weislogel and IRPI set up a group to test the cup on the track through the capillary beverage experiment in 2015.
