Printing technology: How to adjust the upper knife and lower knife of the paper cutter?
When using a paper cutter, it's common to encounter issues such as the "upper knife and lower knife" phenomenon, also known as the "convex knife and concave knife" problem. This issue can lead to misalignment during the printing process, making registration difficult. Below is a detailed analysis of the causes behind this problem and how to address them effectively.
1. **Insufficient Pressure**
There are two main reasons for this:
(a) The mechanical pressure spring may not provide enough force. In such cases, you should increase the pressure. If the maximum cannot be reached, the spring needs to be replaced. It's important to note that if one spring is broken, all springs in the system should be replaced at once to avoid uneven pressure, which can cause the upper and lower knife issue.
(b) Insufficient hydraulic pressure could be due to low oil levels in the system or a faulty pump. Identifying and resolving the root cause is essential to restore proper pressure.
2. **Excessive Gap Between Tool Holder and Slider**
If the gap between the tool holder and the slider becomes too large—usually more than 0.1mm—due to wear or improper adjustment, it can cause instability in the knife holder. This leads to the upper and lower knife phenomenon. Adjusting the gap back to the correct specifications is necessary to resolve the issue.
3. **Blunt Blade**
A dull blade not only affects the quality of the cut but can also damage the machine over time. It's crucial to monitor the cutting load, replace the blade regularly, and ensure it remains sharp. Using a fast blade helps maintain efficiency and prevents unnecessary wear on the equipment.
4. **Incorrect Blade Angle**
The blade angle must be adjusted based on the type of paper being cut. For thin, soft, or loose papers, a smaller angle (25–30°) is recommended, while thicker or harder papers require a larger angle (30–35°). Incorrect angles can lead to misalignment and faster blade wear.
5. **Improper Blade Alignment**
Normally, the blade should be parallel to the platform’s surface. If the blade is too high or too low, it can cause the upper and lower knife effect. Adjusting the blade to ensure it lies flat with the platform is essential.
6. **Feeder Not Perpendicular to Platform**
If the feeder (or backer) is not at a 90-degree angle to the platform, it can result in misalignment. Using a square ruler, adjust the angle to ensure both planes are perpendicular.
7. **Knife Holder Movement Not Perpendicular**
Even if the gap between the knife holder and the slider is correct, the movement direction might not be aligned properly. Adjusting the height of the supporting rods at the back of the platform can help align the movement correctly.
8. **Paper Quality Issues**
New or soft paper may contain trapped air, making it less compact. This can lead to the upper and lower knife phenomenon during cutting. Ensuring the paper is properly pressed before cutting can help prevent this.
9. **Operational Errors**
Two common mistakes include:
(a) Failing to press the paper firmly before cutting, leading to misalignment. Always compress the paper first before making the cut.
(b) Applying inconsistent force when pushing the paper stack forward, causing it to bounce back. Maintaining consistent and controlled pressure is key to avoiding this issue.
By addressing these factors, users can significantly reduce the occurrence of the upper and lower knife phenomenon, ensuring smoother and more accurate paper cutting operations. Regular maintenance and proper technique are essential for optimal performance.
