Beijing 3D printing landscape flower bed welcomes guests

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japan and the World Anti-Fascist War. To honor this significant historical event, the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Landscaping and Greening has unveiled an elaborate flower arrangement plan across Tiananmen Square and Chang'an Street. As part of the commemoration, a "Great Wall" themed wall will be set up on the north side of the Monument to the People's Heroes, while three sets of 3D flower beds will be displayed in Dongdan and Xidan. This is the second time since 2008 that Tiananmen Square will feature a landscape flower bed, showcasing a variety of large-scale flowers such as pines, cypress, and bougainvillea. For the first time, the area from Duanmen to the Tiananmen Gate will also be decorated with floral arrangements. These natural flower beds, which reflect traditional craftsmanship, are designed to create a vivid representation of the Great Wall, using tall pines, colorful plants, white doves, and Jingshi (stone carvings) to symbolize the grandeur of the motherland. The design aims to showcase the beauty of China’s landscapes to international visitors, reflecting the nation's openness and welcoming spirit. In addition, two sets of flower beds will be placed on both sides of the northern entrance of the terminal door, along with 10 sets of container flowers and 20 flower balls on either side of the road leading to Tiananmen. Two welcoming pine flower beds will also be arranged at the entrance of the rest hall. The flower arrangements will continue along Chang’an Avenue, featuring four sets of 3D flower beds in Dongdan and Xidan, each highlighting themes such as "Magnificent Mountain Rivers," "Same Roots," "Chinese Nation," and "Peaceful Development." In Xidan, the theme focuses on people's lives, including "Sowing Dreams," "Common Prosperity," "Harmonious Home," and "Beautiful Tomorrow." Along the street, 200 sets of container flowers and 25,000 square meters of flowers will be arranged. According to the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Landscaping and Greening, the flower arrangements will continue after the National Day holiday, with additional flower beds planned near Jianguomen and Fuxingmen, reflecting themes related to the Olympics and the "Four Comprehensives." Work on the flower arrangements began on August 12th in key areas such as Tiananmen Square and Chang’an Street, with completion expected by August 25th. The floral displays will remain in place until after the National Day Golden Week. One notable feature of this year's display is the cypress flower belt surrounding the Monument to the People’s Heroes. It includes 65 cypress trees, 350 leaf pots, and 7,000 ground flower pots. Additional green spaces, flower balls, and flower belts will be arranged throughout the square, covering a total of 308 square meters for flower beds, 488 square meters for styles, and 3,646 square meters for container flowers. There will also be 80 sets of sidewalk flowers. The "Great Wall" theme flower bed spans 3,000 square meters, with two sections measuring 60 meters long and 25 meters wide. It uses over 3,000 large plants, including cypress, bougainvillea, and pine, along with 700,000 small flower pots, 1,200 square meters of landscape stone, and simulated stone features. Some pines will reach heights of more than 4 meters, making the display even more impressive. To ensure public safety and accessibility, the height of the main flower structures along Chang’an Street has been reduced compared to previous years, allowing better viewing and photo opportunities. Additionally, flower suppliers have adopted a two-batch cultivation strategy to maintain the best visual effect during the "9.3" and "National Day" events. This year's design process also incorporated 3D printing technology alongside traditional clay sculpture methods, ensuring precise execution of the design intent. The flower beds in the southeast corner of Dongdan feature a large tree with blooming flowers, using three different construction techniques to highlight color and pattern changes. Container flowers along Chang’an Street have been customized to blend with traditional Chinese cultural elements, making maintenance and replacement more efficient. All flower materials were carefully controlled to ensure they bloom at the right time, delivering the best possible visual impact during the commemorative events. This year’s floral display not only honors history but also showcases China’s artistic and technological advancements in urban landscaping.
