Novel water immersion 3D scanning method immerses objects in water to reconstruct 3D shapes

<

A new multinational study identified a novel 3D scanning method. This method is based on the ancient principle of Archimedes displacement, immersing objects in water, and reconstructing the shape of 3D objects by measuring the volume change of water. Compared with laser 3D scanning, this method of water immersion can detect hidden areas and deal with materials that are difficult to scan. This research has been published and entitled "Immersion Transformation to Rebuild 3D Shapes".

This international research team includes researchers from Tel Aviv University, Shandong University, University of British Columbia and Ben Gurion University. The team will introduce their work at the annual computer graphics conference SIGGRAPH2017.

Results of 3D scanning technology

Immersion scan

Using a robotic arm, the research team immersed the complex 3D shape in a small pool of water. By measuring the gradual changes in the volume of water caused by an object being immersed in water more and more, the team was able to accurately reconstruct the shape of the object.

The researchers explained that in order to obtain the best 3D reconstruction of the object, they need to immerse the object multiple times in water, each time the angle of immersion is different to form a complete coverage of the shape. The more immersion times, the higher the resolution of the reconstruction.

Immersion and corresponding measurement

advantage

Compared with traditional optical scanners, water immersion technology has several advantages. First and foremost, water can touch all areas of objects, including hidden areas. Secondly, this method treats all materials equally, and it is difficult for traditional scanning equipment to scan shiny or reflective surfaces. Finally, the cost of this method is relatively low compared to using expensive 3D scanning equipment.

future job

Despite these advantages, the researchers noted that the immersion scan method may be time-consuming due to the need to immerse the subject multiple times in water. To solve this problem, the researchers will improve the immersion speed and reduce the number of immersion, thereby optimizing the method.
