Catering food packaging selection and use precautions

[Chinese Packaging Network News] Napkins are a common item found in restaurants, but many reports have revealed that the quality of these napkins is far from satisfactory. Some manufacturers use recycled waste paper during production, which can contain impurities. To mask these and make the paper appear whiter, harmful substances such as toxic fluorescent whitening agents and industrial talcum powder are often added. These materials may act as potential carcinogens. If you notice that the napkins are dark, rough, hard, or easily tear, it’s best to avoid using them for wiping your mouth. Additionally, colored or patterned napkins should be used with caution due to possible chemical risks. Disinfecting wipes are another product that has raised concerns. Many of them contain excessive bacteria, fluorescent whitening agents, aluminum foil bags, and even industrial-grade fragrances. When purchasing wet tissues, always check the manufacturer’s name and expiration date on the packaging. It’s especially important to limit their use for infants and young children, as their skin is more sensitive. Moon cake plastic trays are also problematic. Studies have shown that they often contain high levels of plasticizers—sometimes up to 800 times the allowed limit. To reduce health risks, it’s better to choose mooncakes that come in simple, minimal packaging. Stainless steel cutlery, while commonly used, can pose a risk if not made properly. Cutlery containing iron, chromium, and nickel may rust when exposed to food over time. Some products may cut corners in manufacturing, leading to excessive heavy metal content. This can be dangerous, especially if consumed regularly. PVC cling film is another item to be cautious about. It contains harmful plasticizers and is considered a restricted material in China. It should not be used to wrap fatty foods, cooked meals, or hot items. Although many manufacturers still use it, consumers should look for the pan-yellow PVC material, which is harmful, and opt for white PE (polyethylene) film, which is safe for food packaging. Colorful straws are also a concern. Most of the straws available on the market are “three-no” products—no production license, no quality inspection, and no manufacturer information. The brighter the color, the higher the risk of harmful chemicals leaching into drinks. Disposable foam lunch boxes are made from polystyrene and dimer, both of which are harmful to human health. When using these, always look for the QS logo, and avoid using them for hot or greasy foods. It's best to minimize their use whenever possible. Imitation porcelain tableware, such as melamine dishes, can be difficult to distinguish from real porcelain. To ensure safety, it’s recommended to purchase from reputable stores and supermarkets. Avoid using them in the microwave, and choose items with less color to reduce the risk of chemical release. In summary, being aware of the materials used in everyday products can help protect your health. Always read labels, choose quality products, and stay informed about what you’re consuming.
