Taiwan company develops 3D printing ceramic solution based on powder bed technology
In August 2015, I got my hands on the X1, an economical full-color 3D printer based on powder bed technology from Taiwan. Recently, the company announced that its development team is working on ceramic and glass-based solutions using the X1 3D printer, with promising early results. The ceramic 3D printing solution uses a specially developed ceramic powder to print a sintered prototype on the X1, which is then glazed and finished to produce pottery or porcelain. The texture is more refined, and the temperature can be highly customized due to the 3D printing process. This advancement in ceramic materials could bring 3D printing even closer to everyday life and open up new opportunities for the powder-based 3D printing market.
The traditional pottery-making process requires a lot of time and manual effort. With 3D printing, artisans can save time during the shaping stage and focus more on design. Using 3D models and computer-aided tools, they can create precise symmetrical, hollow, and geometric designs that are difficult to achieve through manual methods. The ceramic powder developed by Addwii, combined with the X1 printer, significantly improves quality control and efficiency. After printing, the pieces are sintered in a small electric kiln at moderate temperatures, and then glazed to produce high-quality ceramic products.
It's also worth noting that the X1 was already capable of using color clay composite powder developed by the company. The progress in ceramic powder development brings the technology one step closer to broader applications.
The company has also been experimenting with glass powder sintering using their own technology. When tapped, the glass products produce a crisp sound, indicating good quality and structural integrity.
