Recently, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) released a report on quality inspections for 29 types of children's products, including children's furniture. A total of 2,354 batches of products from 2,318 companies were tested, covering electronics, light industrial goods, construction materials, machinery, and safety equipment. The overall pass rate was 87.6%. Among these, the unqualified rate for children's furniture reached 32.1%. Specifically, 78 samples of children's furniture from 78 companies across 11 provinces and municipalities—including Beijing, Shanghai, and Shandong—were inspected, with 25 batches failing to meet standards, resulting in a 32.1% failure rate.

In several large chain furniture stores in Xi'an, children's furniture is not cheap at all. For example, a children's bed can cost as much as 8,970 yuan. In the board-wood combination section, children's furniture is generally pricier than adult furniture. An adult bed of 1.5 meters might cost under 2,000 yuan, while a similar-sized children's bed could cost at least 2,300 yuan. A salesperson from a well-known children's furniture brand explained, “Children's furniture requires rounded edges and more detailed craftsmanship compared to adult furniture. Additionally, there are stricter design and material requirements, such as formaldehyde content. Formaldehyde emissions for children's furniture must not exceed 1.5 mg/L, while adult furniture can go up to 3 mg/L. That’s why children's furniture tends to be more expensive.” The reporter then reviewed the inspection report of the store, which clearly stated that the formaldehyde emission should not exceed 1.5 mg/L, and this particular product had a reading of only 0.5 mg/L.

According to the newly implemented national standard for children's furniture, "General Technical Conditions for Children's Furniture," there are strict guidelines beyond just formaldehyde and heavy metal content. The surface finish must be smooth, flat, and free of obvious imperfections like bumps, scratches, or bubbles. The number of defects allowed on the surface should not exceed four. Despite these regulations, the children's furniture market is growing rapidly, leading to a mix of high-quality and substandard products. Some smaller, lesser-known brands may ignore these standards to cut costs and maximize profits. As a result, consumers must be vigilant and carefully inspect any children's furniture they purchase.
