Water-based ink can raise fish image comparable to offset printing
The China (Shanghai) International Printing Week kicked off yesterday at the Shanghai New International Expo Center, featuring a theme of "service innovation, technology leadership, and green development." The event showcased the best of China's printing industry, with all 52 national printing demonstration enterprises participating. It was a significant platform for highlighting the latest advancements in the sector.
One of the most eye-catching exhibits this year was a pair of goldfish tanks in the flexographic printing area. However, instead of actual fish, the tanks contained water-based inks used in flexo printing. This creative display aimed to emphasize that flexographic printing is not only non-toxic but also safe, eco-friendly, and healthy—proving that green technology can be both effective and visually appealing.
Green printing has now become a standard in primary and secondary school textbooks across the city. On display were two math books: one printed using traditional offset printing, and the other using flexographic methods. While the images and text looked identical at first glance, there was a noticeable difference when held. The offset book carried a familiar ink smell, while the flexographic version was nearly odorless. A sign nearby listed the metal content of the water-based ink used, reinforcing its safety.
Jin Weikang, assistant general manager of Shanghai Xinhua Printing Co., Ltd., shared insights on the progress of flexographic printing. He mentioned that last year’s flexographic books used 110-line technology, which wasn’t as sharp or vivid as offset printing. This year, however, the technology has advanced to over 150 lines, making the difference between the two types of books almost imperceptible. "It won’t affect the reading experience at all," Jin said.
He also spoke about the popular children’s book series “Listen to Dad Telling Stories,†which was initially overlooked in China. The publisher was concerned about its sales until they took it to the Bologna Children’s Book Fair in Italy. There, the books became the first set of children’s books printed with environmentally friendly ink to gain international attention. Not only did foreign buyers love them, but even Chinese publishers showed great interest. "Our 'Made in China' books are still accepted by ourselves only after they're 'gilded' abroad," Jin joked.
This summer, several well-known literary journals, including "Harvest" and "Sprout," will join forces with Xinhua Printing to use flexographic printing, bringing readers a healthier and greener reading experience.
At the opening ceremony, Yan Xiaohong, deputy director of the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television, delivered a speech, and Shanghai Deputy Mayor Weng Tiehui also attended, underscoring the importance of the event in promoting sustainable practices in the printing industry.
